The Olive Ridley Turtles play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate ecological balance of marine ecosystems. Nestled along the enchanting western coast of India, Sindhudurg district is not only home to a vibrant array of marine species, including corals, dolphins, and diverse birdlife, but also to the magnificent Olive Ridley Turtles. Each year, these beaches become a sanctuary as the turtles come ashore to lay their precious eggs.

Sadly, this region has not always been a safe haven for these remarkable creatures. The Olive Ridley Turtles face numerous threats, from poaching and consumption as a delicacy to ocean pollution and accidental capture in fishing nets. Recognising the urgency of protecting these endangered species, the Maharashtra Forest Department sprang into action.

Through workshops organised by the forest department, residents were educated about turtle conservation, including insights into various turtle species, and the importance of raising awareness. Inspired by these initiatives, the local communities became pioneers in the preservation of these remarkable creatures. Since 2011, their concerted efforts have resulted in the conservation of over 280 nests and the safe release of approximately 17,000 turtles.

Simit Bhagat Studios is dedicated to amplifying causes that drive meaningful societal change. Our primary objective for this project was to create nationwide awareness about the plight of these endangered species, particularly among coastal communities rich in marine biodiversity.

The project involved capturing the villagers’ experiences and documenting their incredible journey in turtle conservation. Through heartfelt interviews, we aimed to capture the essence of their initial steps in this conservation process and how they wholeheartedly embraced the cause.

Utilising the power of documentary filmmaking, we sought to bring these villagers’ authentic stories to life and raise awareness about the issue. The documentary film serves as a poignant reminder of the remarkable impact that individuals and communities can have when united in a common cause. It offers a compelling call to action, urging viewers to embrace conservation efforts and contribute to safeguarding our natural heritage.
