Mangrove forests play a vital role in balancing the coastal food chain and providing essential habitat and breeding grounds for various marine species. However, a large section of mangrove areas remain isolated from human interaction, leaving them vulnerable to threats including deforestation and habitat degradation.

In an effort to engage local communities in conservation and foster sustainable livelihoods, the Maharashtra Mangrove Cell launched an eco-tourism initiative in Sindhudurg District of Maharashtra.

This pioneering project, led entirely by fisherwomen, provides them the opportunity to become tour guides, offering scenic tours, while providing insightful information to tourists about the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this unique ecosystem.

This empowering ecotourism initiative has become a catalyst for women’s empowerment, breaking stereotypes and instilling a sense of pride in the local community.

We at Simit Bhagat Studios captured this initiative through a short impact film to highlight  and share the stories of these inspiring changemakers. In collaboration with the Maharashtra Mangrove Cell, we had the privilege of interviewing the women involved in this initiative.

Our goal was to educate communities, ignite conversations and demonstrate how women empowerment initiatives can go hand in hand with conservation efforts.

The film serves as a testament to the incredible achievements of the fisherwomen and their unwavering passion.

By showcasing their journey and highlighting the significance of mangrove conservation, we hope to inspire a wider audience to embrace eco-tourism, support local communities, and contribute to the preservation of our precious ecosystems.
